Columbus is the largest city and capital of Ohio. It was named after Christopher Columbus. The city was founded in 1812 at the junction of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. It assumed the functions of state capital in 1816. The city's diverse economy is based in education, insurance, healthcare, and technology. Ranked the 8th best large city in the US by Money Magazine, it is also known as an emerging Global City.
In 2005 Columbus ranked as the 15th largest city in the US, with over 725,000 residents, and is the country's 32nd largest metropolitan area. It is located near the geographic center of the state and is the county seat of Franklin County, although some parts of the city extend into Delaware and Fairfield counties.
The American Professional Football Association was founded in Canton in 1920 with its head offices moved to Columbus in 1921. It remained in the city until 1941. In 1922 this association's name was changed to the National Football League (NFL).
